Antiquing holds a unique allure: the thrill of unearthing treasures from previous lifetimes, the excitement of delving into history, and the joy of preserving and appreciating incredible craftsmanship. Often when I am antiquing, I am on the hunt for a specific item to grace my shelves or complete a set. Other times I am searching for inspiration. Every time I am learning.

I consider antiquing a sport. It takes knowledge, passion, and a little practice. Let’s jump into the sport together so we can up our game!

What is considered an antique?

Antiques are objects that hold historical, cultural, or artistic significance due to their age, rarity, and craftsmanship. Generally, items older than 100 years are considered antiques. These items encompass a wide array of categories, including furniture, art, jewelry, ceramics, books, and more. Whether you stumble upon an ornate Art Nouveau lamp, an intricately carved Renaissance chest, or a delicate Ming dynasty porcelain vase, keep in mind that each antique tells a story of its ear, reflecting the social, economic, and artistic trends that prevailed at the time of its creation.

How can you determine if an item has value?

The allure of antiquing increases when you uncover an item of substantial value. To discern a valuable antique from a mere relic, several factors come into play including:

  • Condition

  • Provenance (history of ownership)

  • Rarity

  • The demand among collectors

For beginners, understanding the factors that determine value can be both exciting and challenging but there are plenty of resources with which you can arm yourself to help navigate in this world. Consider tapping into one or more of the following:

  • Antique Price Guides: These books provide valuable information about the current market value of various antiques. Examples include Kovels’ Antiques and Collectibles Price Guide and Miller’s Antiques Handbook & Price Guide.

  • Online Auction Platforms: Websites like eBay, liveauctioneers, and invaluable offer a wealth of information on past auction results, helping you gauge what similar items have sold for recently.

  • Collectibles Magazines: Magazines like the Journal of Antiques & Collectibles and feature articles about various antiques and their values, making them informative resources.

  • Local Libraries and Bookstores: Books on specific categories of antiques, such as furniture, ceramics, or jewelry, can offer in-depth knowledge about the history, styles, and values of these items.

  • Educational Workshops and Seminars: Consider attending workshops or seminars hosted by experts in the field. These sessions can provide comprehensive insights into appraising and valuing antiques.

Remember, while these resources are valuable, learning about antiques takes time and practice. It’s essential to develop a discerning eye and gain experience through observation, research, and interaction with knowledgeable individuals.
